    Thanks Gents. As you know I've become very "VIN-centric". To my eyes the general unevenness of the characters looks wrong. Some appear to be stamped way to deeply and the last 9 appears shorter than adjacent characters- but it's hard to tell from a low res pic. There is one easy way to tell for sure, though....

      bill as I noted in my post the way the VIN is stamped varied from year to year. In the 1970 MY they did look all over the place as I suspect each number was hand stamped. Later on, and certainly by the time mine was done it was a machine stamp doing the whole number at the same time and as a consequence looking much neater see mine below. It is a bit hard to see but in this year they have an * not a star at each end
