    Just joined

    I'm John Sumner - live in Tasmania and I've just purchased a 911T (1969).
It sits with my 1987 911 Targa, 1985 MB 380SL, 1988 Ferrari 328GTS and my everyday drive (1966 MGB).
It sits a bit sadly because the right side window doesn't work.
It had a parallel arm regulator but I'm told by Mr Pelican they're no longer made.
I bought a cross arm regulator and find I now need Part #911-542-058-00 - window lifter.
Does anybody out there have one?
Also, the engine has a pronounced screech - my auto guru (Harry) thought it might be the timing chains, but they are self tensioning.
A local Porsche owner listened and thought the engine note was normal - "they're really go karts" was his considered judgement.

Nice stable you have there John
I'm a newbie too - enjoy the forum!

    Cheers Peter (thanks Merv)

Welcome to both of you. It is good to put a first name in P-Kay, for those of us who like to use actual names. John so the 69 is on carbs? A screech (what air cleaner does it have) could be in the fan bearing, pulley or belt perhaps also.

Welcome John, we also have some Ferrari "experts" on this Forum as well. In particular Carl Jones is a guru on 308 and 328's and does a lot of work on these cars in his Melbourne workshop as well as other Ferraris. I have a 360 Modena coupe as well as some 911's. Unfortunately the 360 is not running at present.

          Its a "real" Ferrari.

I think Johns friend was referring to how they handle rather than its current sound.

              Hi John,

Start the car with the fan belt off. That rules out a lot. Don't run it for long as it will get hot quickly. Then fault find from there.

Hi John and welcome. When does this screech happen? On start up or constant. Should basically make the same sounds as your Targa, but with a bit more induction noise through the carbs. Can you get someone to start the engine while you watch and listen, there should not be any internal screeches , has the car been sitting idle for a while and when was it last serviced?
                Cheers

                  Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
On day 1 we took off the fan belt - bearing is OK and the screech was still there.
                  It's constant - not affected by start-up.
Harry put the stethoscope over the front of the engine.
The noise is coming from both flanks - we think it's timing chains on both sides.
                  Bugger!

If it has not already been done, also upgrade to the later carrera chain tensioners while you are there.

When mine screeched it was an air leak between carbs and manifold. Sounded like an alternator bearing.
