Would be guessing (probably the same as you are ) but maybe a secondhand car dealer?

A gentleman of that name was sales manager at Hamilton’s in the mid 70s.

And he was a gentleman? He has a trophy named after him http://www.pcv.com.au/PorscheClubs/p...2570F4004AF7B5

Feel a tad ancient writing this! Tony Jones had a long association with Norman Hamilton and Company South Yarra. He was their sales manager for much of the 1970s when Hamiltons also sold Volvo product. His time with Porsche goes back to about 1968 when he shared a 911 with Alan Hamilton in a three hour event at Sandown Park. He was also very supportive of the newly formed Porsche Club in Victoria from the mid 1970s. Tony left the employ of Hamiltons in about 1978 and was replaced by a mad (He really was!!) Hungarian named Henry Kuba. That's a story in itself and would make an amusing tale over a glass of wine one evening.

Tony went out on his own to start his car dealership in the Eastern suburbs which specialised in used vehicles, specifically Porsche. No doubt fueled by the large customer base he had built whilst in South Yarra. This business ran until about 1980 or so when he passed away, the reason for which I have forgotten. I think he was only in his early 40s or so. It's a nice piece of history you have there on your sill from back in the days when seeing a Porsche on the road was really something.

I'm reminded it would be good to get some of these stories down along with any pertinent images from these dealerships from a bygone era. All of my friends from this period are either dead or demented.

What a classic, race categories based on PRICE!! PS: and I did go to Sandown in those days starting with the first meeting there (Southern Sixties?) main race won by Alan Moffat in his brand new Karcraft Boss Mustang - paint almost still wet from the Coca Cola advertising. PPS: just as well I'm not a close friend of yours Carl or I might fit into the dead or demented category - Ha Ha

Thank you Carl, that is great and I agree that it would be so nice to hear about some of the characters that have supported and made this scene what it remains today.

Yes, I agree Tom. It’s the reason why having this forum or any other forum for that matter is a great tool.
It connects us all into one place and let’s encourage random stories of motor vehicle related randomness.

The Age, Tues July 18, 1978.

Tony Jones & Co will show you 'how to buy a better Porsche'.

No doubt I also slept better that night knowing that the Bacon Chief was charged.

And finally I'm sure the page 22 piece on "Computers and you in the future' would not have foresaw bots, phishing and free naughty movies...
