    Correct positioning of 70S horns

My 70S has had its original horns removed, and I'm now going back to delivery spec. The horn mounting configuration changed from 1971 onwards.

Does anyone have an Australian 1970 car (preferably an S, as they have the front right oil cooler) with its original horns fitted?

I also understand that there were two horn types available (long trumpet type, and small snail type). It appears that Australian cars were delivered with trumpet styles. Or were they?

As always, the devil is in the detail....

A pity Clyde is away in Japan. Maybe he will chime in when he gets on WiFi as he seems to also be a horn expert.

My '71 (Australian Delivered) has trumpets - which appear to be original. I understand tho, that Clyde has reason to believe that banjos were correct.

Suggest also that a search of the forum may find where this has been discussed previously

Thanks Michael - it appears that most have trumpets. Only one I have heard of with snails is Ashton's.

              Any more observations folks??

Clyde from the past: "They changed (to banjo/trumpet) mid year 73 it seems around Jan but as always there are exceptions out there it seems"

Thanks Merv. But changed from what? I think it’s changed from banjo style to mixo trumpets in Jan 73.

Mine in, 68 had snails. Banjo and Trumpet are conflated on some posts (Clyde's included). Long and short variants. Before that snails I assume. This helps http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...igh-tone-horns

                        Yet another restoration rabbit hole..

I'm trying to figure out what horns I need for my '70 T. At some point the original ones got a good coating of stone guard.. I'm guessing when the exterior was repainted. The parts catalog shows that '70 T's (and E's) had 902 635 102 00 which doesn't look like it matches what's on the car currently. SMC have a replacement set https://sierramadrecollection.com/91...et-p18547.html and says they replace the "original trumpet style horn", but from above comment it appears trumpets didn't come in til '73..

                        Thoughts?

Jeez I can’t remember what I did with my snail horns. I’ll try and take a pic this week.

The guys who all mention trumpets on their early cars either are confusing banjos as trumpets or they all definately have the wrong horns.

banjos do have a small trumpet part but are called that due to the overall shape of the horn looking like a banjo as opposed to a full trumpet

trumpets definately did not start until the mid year 73

I will post a pic of both types tomorrow.

Cool, thanks Clyde - so it seems that SMC kit is probably the right replacements for my '70T then.
