Ever wondered what the inside of your MFI hot air intake box looks like
Quite clever.
I am not mechanic but it seems that the brass thermostat has a central pin that as it warms up pushes out of the thermostat against the rod housed inside the spring to close the flap and inhibit air flow bit by bit as the engine warms up. My thermostat still works as I dunked it in boiling water and the pin gradually popped out.
It reverts to the flap being fully open to allow hot air in when it cools down.
My unit was full of sludge, same as I found inside the air cleaner filter housing and the thermostat was covered in the same too no doubt hindering it's performance. I guess exhaust remnants, oil smoke etc are the cause of the sludge
Hopefully mine works a bit better now once I figure out how to put it back together properly
Forgot to take the obligatory before pics.

Maybe not quite but now very close after plating done and all put back together.
Just waiting for the bracket to return from the painters and then back on the motor.

More progress, engine back in the car as is all the restored rear suspension, new exhaust system, new everything actually. Should get it fired up next week when the cold start mechanism is sorted.
This was not an engine rebuild just a massive clean up and seal replacement.
Car is a bit down in cylinders but drove very well so thought I could put up with some oil useage but not oil leakage.
It is highly original, all books present, matching date wheels, great options with a cool history and will clean up very well even though it is far from perfect but the more I look at the colour the more I am liking it. and the more I can see it looking great even with it's few flaws.
Everyone else seems to like the gold tooClyde Boyer

Got it home today and spend a great day in ISO fine cleaning, luckily I had a spare fuse box cover and clip, spare jack and a new trunk carpet set to complete the luggage area.
