    Build thread: 69 911S

Started this thread to consolidate all my questions as I work through restoring my 69 911S. First up a basic one:

I believe my indicators front and back should have a silver surround rather than black. Is it just a case of removing the black paint or is the actual assembly incorrect please?

Definitely silver, but removing the black may only uncover bare plastic if they weren't silver to start with...

Is the silver on the lense or the assembly?

The silver is on the back of the plastic lense. You will find some people tape up the lense and apply black over the silver, to achieve a new look. First find out if someone has done that. If so it will be a gentle process of removing that black, from the front of the lense, to reveal the silver.

The black edged lenses were only used on 73 models with all years up to 72 using silver trimmed lenses. Originally you could only buy original Bosch lenses as replacement and silver ones were twice the price of black ones so many owners opted for the cheaper ones when replacing a cracked or faded front or rear taillight lens.

Now there are quite a few repro lenses made, many from Italy of varying quality and you will see these for sale on SMC, CarPoint and other internet Porsche parts sellers. You usually get what you pay for with the cheaper ones and fit and finish is often very average.

From my memory, for original Bosch lenses they were either silver or black and not painted over . Be carreful when buying either xomplete indicator assemblies or lense off US Ebay as there is a difference between Euro and US turn signals wiht both colouring of lenses and also location of bulbs in the actual housing (mainly fronts). We need the euro housings for correct colouring and park and turn signal lights here in Australia.

Thanks everyone! I'll see if I can use some thinners to take off the outer black paint and uncover what lies beneath!

Here's how I'm going with my 69 toolkit. I *think* I have everything except for the 10,000V blade screwdriver...

Some kits also had a small packet of 3 or 4 fuses plus the "PORSCHE" workshop towel which you can source off ebay.

Is this the plug spanner you have ? another pic below of a kit with an older style plug spanner.

Plug spanner correct as is the bag (good find) and Phil is right you need the Pudenz 5pk fuse thingy. Looks like you have the correct screwdriver style too where the handle is a little fatter than the 71-73 styles

                      Be quick

Short one fuse, but otherwise an original pack of PUDENZ fuses. 60 shipped in the US. Could use a day at the spa, to clean it up a bit. Thank you! 559460 559461

Am not sure which tool is corect for a 69 toolkit for use in holding the fan belt pulley when changing a fan belt. There are 2 types: the "C" type spanner and also the flat bar with teh 2 pins at one end (which it appears you have in yr current kit).

a pic of some tools with the C spanner is below. There used to be a seller in California on ebay called "rowdy" who Clyde and I bought tools off and who used to sell complete kits. I doubt he is still around but Clyde might know.

Just found a pic of the pulley wrench "P 208" being the flat bar with 2 pins.

Yes the Klein 21 plug spanner is correct. Are your pliers marked Hapwe ?

Just found this thread on Early S, supposedly showing correct tools for 69-73:

                              https://www.early911sregistry.org/fo...s-amp-Contents

It was a "sticky" under 911 parts for sale.
