Paying GST twice - be careful

    Hi,

I order parts from overseas almost monthly, and although I hate the fact the shipping company asks me to pay GST and import charges, even though 99% of these parts are just not made here, I get the concept and have accepted it as 'it's just what it is'.
However, my last shipment from Pelican Parts was over US$1,000 and asked me for 10% GST (US$140) for destination Australia. Normally that's only for purchases under $1,000 but I figured things may have changed.
A week later I receive an email from UPS that I have to pay charges for importation of goods: AUD$311. I check the details and to my surprise and disappointment, it includes AUD$198 for GST. Reached out to them, but the end of it was: you either pay to release the good, or we send it back to the US.
It looks like Paelican has made a mistake here, and I'm discussing a resolution here, but when i used their website yesterday to try if this was a fluke or not, the exact same thing would have happened if i went through with it, I added parts up to over US$1,000 and it asked for 10% GST at the check-out.
Are we paying double this way (and is PP in the wrong here) or is this some tariff-stuff? Either way, be aware and if this is a mistake in their web-tool, maybe buy elsewhere until they fix it. After all, parts are expensive enough as they are.

I find I avoid most of these issues if I ship via Fedex rather than UPS - with UPS I always seem to get tagged for import GST/duties and with Fedex I never do.. Also you can try and use a freight forwarding company like www.myus.com which allows you to consolidate multiple US orders etc.
