Clyde this sounds like a fun build with some expensive fruit!

So is this a retirement project?!

And someone has to ask is this a LHD or RHD car !?

No not a retirement project, Dave hopes to have the body 100% completed to a rolling shell by November this year, so will be pretty quick.

This has to be LHD car, it is currently LHD and could easily be changed to RHD in its current form but not going to. Will keep the conversion costs to go towards some of that fruit you describe.

              Agreed John,

the US and Euro market are far bigger opportunities to sell a well built ST replica into. Australia has very few buyers at present and who knows where the market will be in the future ?

Clyde says he hasnt had any action on this 72 T/E which I believe, is an excellent car for the money being asked.

If this was 2006, the car would have lasted about a week on carsales.com.au.

Ahh, the mythical early 911 parts hoard that is Clydes garage attic.

Now guarded by well trained (hungry) dobermans.....

                            So to the beginning

Its and ex USA car from Virginia T non sunroof coupe delivered January 15th, 1972.

Its not the greatest shell I have ever seen but Dave has worked some magic with more to come.

Floors pretty good, rear seat and parcel shelf area toasted and front toasted as you can see. Battery boxes seem to have survived OK.

Car is completely stripped and Dave had commenced repairs some time ago but the project never progressed as other projects took over as main priorities.

So what are we (read Classic Road and Track) doing.

Fibreglass rear and front bars (S style front spoiler as per 72 ST)
                            Steel rear ST flares
                            Front ST fibreglass guards
                            Fibreglass and balsa wood bonnet
                            Aluminium door skins
Alloy rear engine lid (Boyer parts stash)
Correct strut for alloy lid (Boyer parts stash)
Body shell deadener delete (my gig soon)
72 S suspension including all ST modifications
7" front and 9" rear Fuchs in ST finish (same as RSR )
380 mm thick grip wheel with horn push as per R model (Boyer parts stash)
                            Dead pedal (Boyer parts stash)
                            Glove box delete
                            Driver side visor only
ST seats (eventually, when I can find some)
                            Black headliner
                            Black felt interior
                            Correct ST half cage
                            180 mph speedo
                            10,000 rpm tacho
                            RS lighweight style door trims
Twin 72 only style oil coolers, in guards, with metal crossover lines and protection plates
Front and rear underbody ST protection plates.
                            Front strut brace

So the aim is to have the body so its next to impossible to tell it apart form a car leaving the fatory.

Here is what I am aiming for clean and menacing in Viper Green. This is a shot of a 72 2.5ST at the factory some time early in 1972.

Mechanically I had in mind to try to emulate a correct ST MFI 2.5 engine............that was until I rang Russell Edmond Harris today that is.

I have the correct 7r case

                                I need a correct race MFI pump.................................$40,000
I need a correct 915 with front oil cooler and LSD.........$25,000
I need a correct set of 2R high butterfly throttle bodies.$20,000
                                I need a smaller fan ................................................$ 3,000
                                I need a correct granade oil filter/cooler .....................$ 5,000
I need twin oil coolers and hard crossover lines............$10,000

and thats before you spend another $40k rebuilding the motor and gearbox to 2.5 spec etc etc etc.

So you can see from that its NOT going to happen. I almost started laughing as he rattled off the prices...and he has it all thats the scary bit.

Many of these cars ran with Weber 46IDA carbies so it may be more prudent to try to emulate that look instead rather than selling my house to fix a car.

No final decisions on the engine yet and in any event it can be changed down the track if I find a correct ST motor in a barn!!!
