General discussion on value of members car

I'd very much like to get the opinions of the forum on putting a price on my car? Not sure if this is the correct forum for this discussion, or if it's even appropriate to ask. Accepted that the market finds it's level but would be good to know where to start. We, as a forum like to discuss what's available elsewhere at what price but I've not seen a discussion of value among members about one of our own. I admit it could be awkward but it's accepted that opinions are opinions but they would be valuable to me as I'm new to the Aussie marketplace.

As the saying goes, absence make s the heart grow fonder - of something else.

As much as I love this car, and have counted the years off until she was with me again, I’m feeling the calling of change. It’s a sickness, I know. I’ve owned 0524 for just on a decade, which is long for me to commit to one car, but admittedly a lot of that time has been in absentia. The reality is I’ve come to the realisation that we’ve grown apart, and that there is a better custodian for her that will be happy to attend to the list of little things that need doing to take her from good to great. From this forum I know there are such creatures out there. I’d personally prefer to go back to owning a gentleman’s hot rod that can be tracked and driven hard with less regard for absolute originality. Fishcop’s car would be where my taste is at. I’ve had sort of things before (twice) and that’s definitely where the fun is to be had.

Don’t get me wrong. I love original cars. I’m just not sure I want to be the custodian of that as my only car. In my previous life I had the space to own several and that solved the problem, but inner city living (and my responsibilities now) do not make allowance for such indulgences.

So I’m going to ring the bell on that great forum topic and humbly ask the forum to consider the evidence and it's vast experience and help me put a number on it. Though the market will ultimately dictate the sale price, I think it’s important to go in at a considered number so as not to undermine the value of good, original RHD cars, in all our interests.

VIN9111200524, a factory RHD 911E Coupe Sportomatic, in metallic silver was ordered in November 1970 and delivered to South Africa. Options included an electric sunroof (option 650), rear stabilizer bar (404) radio antennae (440) and gloss wheel arch trim(426). This is confirmed by the factory certificate of authenticity. I don’t have a lot of information on it for the first half of it’s life, but from 1997 it came into the care of early Porsche specialist Tim Abbot (now of Dutchman fame) who has looked after the car since then.

Hence I have service records since that time, which documents the perseverance with the sporto ‘box, until finally it’s replacement with the 901/911 manual transmission it runs today. I took ownership in '06 and have continued to keep up maintenance via only Porsche specialist workshops. Most recently a new set of Bilsteins and new H4’s have been added.

While not a concourse garage queen, she is original, presents well, is correct (barring gearbox) and runs beautifully. Barring the Sporto gearbox she’s got all of what she should have. Numbers match (engine and chassis), paint is original barring some evidence of localised repairs. The interior is good (including original door pockets) but could do with some tidying up/ reskinning of armrests. Carpet is very good. MFI is in place as it should be, perhaps running a little rich. She’s lived her life at high altitude and dry climate so rust shouldn’t be a major issue but I know better than to claim she’s totally rust free. There is none visible other than a bubble on the roof and a bubble at the threshold strip. Battery boxes appear good. Tool roll and spare present. Manual is not.

Fuchs were swapped over from my ’71 T, because they had been refurbed (I was indifferent to date stamps then).

I replaced the comfort seats with leather Recaro Idealsitz sport seats apparently from an S back when they were still available. They are, of course, hard to come by in original form these days. I also sourced the Blaupunkt Frankfurt.

I’ve just had the boys at Cavaco Motors go over the car and she’s mechanically good. That said we all know the the brave might want to undertake deeper inspections, (or return to Sporto- gulp) …it’s a journey. I just don’t have an appetite for it. The car would be good as a basis for a restoration or simply enjoyed as is, which IMO is where the real beauty is.

Given that she is not Aussie delivered I realise there is a penalty for that. I’m aware the latest auctions in the UK have been slightly soft on values but I believe there’s a place in market for original, unrestored and running RHD examples. That said all opinions from this forum are welcomed and taken in context of a casual values discussion. I’d prefer to market within the community initially of course, but will eventually put it out the broader market, which I’d really prefer to avoid.

I’ll spare you further babble and present some pictures. I'll add some of the motor tomorrow.

Once again, opinions tendered would be accepted as such of course, and I accept that the market inevitably finds the true value, but I believe it's in all our interests to position the asking price realistically and avoid over or under pricing.

      Thanks in advance

        Hi Janyon,

It looks like a lovely car.

I'm not sure that this forum will give you an accurate gauge of the value of this car.

You will have people with similar cars to yours saying it is worth a mint and people who want to buy your car saying it is worth nothing

The only true way to judge it's value is to put it on the market.

But, based on what it is and prices seen elsewhere for siimilar cars I would say in the region of $175-200k (the seats alone are worth $15k).

        Let the discussion begin.

        Cheers,

        Harry.

          It's hard isn't it!!!!!
Such a lovely car by the way.
I think the premium $'s in Australia are in RHD cars that are Aussie built. I am not sure why that is but I have seen UK cars go for the same amount as a converted car.
I have also had a few South African cars and they have all been great and mostly rust free and you have more of a chance of keeping an original unrestored body.
For me the biggest selling point is that it is unrestored. You simply cannot reproduce that, even with a few paint touch ups it is still way better than a freshly paint 10/10 paint job in my eyes. I also like the sunroof option as well.
Sporto is a touchy subject on here as there are a few supporters. I have never driven one so I will not comment.

Harry is on the money regarding $175k but remember it will cost you close to that building a hot rod. Then you will have a very small market in which to sell when you do.

Financially speaking I wouldn't sell this car. Put the original engine aside and fit a bigger engine and enjoy the fun. Some reversible suspension mod's and you are away.

Good luck either way. Put up a WTB on all the forum's. State you are looking for an original paint RHD and see how that goes for you. I suspect not too many replies.

Hi Janyon, i think we all feel that urge to own something different from time to time. Its the sellers regret that's a little harder to undo! Prices have been all over the place in the last few months so its a tough call. Why don't you speak with the guys at The Classic Throttle Shop? I have always found them very approachable, happy to talk cars and they always seem to have their finger on the pulse. Good luck and hope you find what your looking for!

This has become a car for sale thread so I am shifting it to the appropriate section

Janyon in accordance with club policy you will need to put a price on the car please.

Gentlemen, thank you for your input. Much appreciated. You have confirmed my thoughts on the number.
Jim, you're spot on. It is bloody hard! I literally dither and change my mind from day to day. Every drive puts me back in the "hold onto it" camp. The decade that I've owned this car has been a momentus and bittersweet one in my life. This car was a constant while almost everything else changed. I even got the identical scale model in my office as reminder when it was still in storage in SA. I've owned and sold more significant cars so no stranger to the sellers lament Mick. I must say I've not had a good experience with CTS but I'll leave it there.
Clyde - As per the rules I will start a new FS thread with the price when I've made up my mind to put it out there if that's okay? I did ask at he outset you'll note as I was unsure. For now it was just a discussion. Thanks again fellas.

Hope you understand our position but "what is this worth" threads are nearly always and invitation to make an offer as the poster is thinking of or wanting to sell hence why I shifted the post.

General Info will be full of these threads if I didn't and that is not what that section is for.
