    Here is some more info...

    From seller:
'The car was originally sent to the USA and from the paperwork I have in my possession, it was brought to Australia in 1988. I have not found any paperwork indicating if the conversion occured in the US or in Australia, but it has been converted at some stage. I have attached some interior shots, but as I indicated on carsales the vehicle is part way through restoration. If you want a vehicle that is ready to drive, then this one is NOT for you. Only the bodywork has been done...and it is stunning.'

    Here are some interior pics:

Hopefully the owner wasnt planning to send the engine to Motormeister in the USA for rebuilding !! Why would you send a motor across there for a rebuild anyway ? Unless oyu have been lulled into beleiving some of the ads you read in the US mags claiming low cost rebuilds.

There is no such thing as a low cost 911 engine rebuild. Not if its done properly.

I have just stripped down an engine thats done about 25,000 miles since a mid '90's rebuild by a South Australian Porsche dealership (that shall go unamed) and the standard of workmanship, machining and assembling of some parts leaves a whole lot to be desired.

And they still charged big dollars way back then.

Having rebuilt a couple of motors and gearboxes recently, I have seen first-hand whats required to do it right.

am I missing something? If the bodywork restoration has been done and it is "stunning", why are there a distinct rust colour in the engine bay?

... and the inside of the wheel wells...

mind you, $37K for a car that has had it's body issues sort out (conversion aside)... might be an ok value proposition. personally I would wait for the financial crisis to really bite hard into the pockets of the americans and then buy up big.

          and Clyde's targa was stunning...

oh my god, i have just become one of those people that comments on cars without actually seeing it except for some low res photos...

my car didn't look great in the photos, but was actually a pretty good buy (in my opinion)... would like to know what this one is like in person given that it is in the same ball-park as what i paid for mine...

Yeah I agree Rich, there were too many tell tales in the pics that did NOT point to the car being as "stunning" as is claimed. Seems they didnt remove the engine or replace the sound paid or clean up the wheel arches. Wipers are still on the wrong side and with you wonder what else was short-cut in the conversion. Whats the story with the engine too ?

I was in Canberra over the weekend and tried to get a look at this car. The owner,Rachel, said that she had sent the original engine to the US "because it was cheaper to get it rebuilt there" but it's still there. She was not sure what engine was in the car but it could be an earlier engine?? and not a 2.2. but was going to check the engine number. She was flying out to QLD so I couldn't see it over the weekend. Says she has had a lot of interest (no buyers obviously) and wants to move it to buy a 356. Hmm??

How she funds a 356 isn't the interesting bit to me (maybe share trading has been good it the recent volatility)...

the interesting bit to me is how shipping the engine to the USA, getting the engine rebuilt, then shipping it all the way back again (copping duty/GST on the work done when it re-enters the country) is cheaper than one of the good blokes here (like phil hearn)?!? would like to see that maths!

and does the original engine come with the car? how do you prove the engine actually exists when it's in the states? "Here, buy this car, but the engine is on the other side of the world. trust me."

                  sounds a bit odd...

Sounds like she is a victim of the infamous Motormeister advertising claiiming rebuilt engines for $2995 using your old engine. Just do a search on Pelican or early S for Motormeister to read the horror stories.

How can you rebuild a motor for less than the cost of the parts ??

Will be interesting if she ever sees the motor again and ifso, what condition it arrives back in.

And of course with the dollar not at US$0.75, if she hasnt paid for it yet - more heartache.

Time to kiss goodbye to all those cheap US sourced parts guys !

Hi I am in canberra if any one wants the car looked at. Also and not too discredit the work of Progress Motors, I have heard varying opinions on quality from other body specialists - So 'stunning' it may only be in inverted commas. Michel

Have spoken with Rachael and the word 'stunning' keeps coming up...A couple of extras things. 1st gear is non operable so gearbox is suspect and also the seller is not really clear what was done on the car. However she does have a CD of the restoration undertaken by progress Motors. The original motor is still in Canberra.
I am looking at the car on the weekend if anyone interested. Rachael

keep us posted - afterall it is only a mid0$30's car... so can't expect it to be concourse...

1st gear "inoperable" is a major $$$$ fix. I sometimes wonder how some people spend a lot of getting bodywork perfect but leave the mechanicals till last, often having spent too much on the body/paint leaving little left to get the car running right.

I just purchased the car and with a little bit of tidying it will present OK. Now it looks like I can get too Thredbo. Comes with the original 2.0 litre motor as well and sundry other parts. New exhaust etc.

I will sell the car again as i only want it while my 912 is being rebuilt.

Was a good buy all considering . Now looking to sought out the Gearbox issue.
