This will make a nice speedster project. If only I had the room.

I aways think it is incredible what people will do, and how much they will spend, on a once original car. It bears almost no resemblance to what it once was.

yes but what you forget was that 20 - 30 years ago they were cheap and expendable.

I've lost count of the number of small bumper cars I saw converted to guards red 3.3 Turbos in the late 70's / early 80's just in Sydney!

Or the stories of 934 flares being pop riveted onto 2.8RSR's to keep the car moderately competitive for another year!

True Justin, but what interests me is their motivation for the whole disguise thing. To make a 912 look like a Turbo ... I get the 'wannabe' aspect but it must have been quite expensive to do the modifications even then. This doesn't seem to happen to early Caymans and Boxters now - but maybe it does.

                This may explain it

Keeping it in perspective, it's no different to putting GTS badges onto base Kingswood or M badges onto a 320i

My second project car was a base HJ 1 tonner. Out came the 202 and traumatic and in went a 350 with Toyota Supra 5 speed. It also got a Statesman front and bucket seats... We laugh now, but it was the height of cool when I did it

I do find this car tempting (certainly as a speedster) and if it was close enough for me to go see I would. I have sufficient spare panels to resurrect it. A 200hp Type IV motor could make an excellent hillclimber out of it. It could also make an excellent 'father-son' project and be brought in under $20k with glass panels and a donor VW. All this presuming it has limited rust issues and purchase price under $10k.

And I have a complete early roof clip with fully operational sunroof (and the hard to get early parts) plus headliner in excellent condition for anyone who may want to convert it back to a coupe!
Will post separately shortly; looking for what I paid for it about 2 years ago when I purchased it being $800 (which would be the cost of parts of the sunroof mechanism). Food for thought....

I would drive over with the trailer for that Craig.
