PCV Grand Tassie Tour April 2021

Well a month ago I ticked an item off my bucket list. A spirited, enjoyable and safe drive in my newly acquired Carrera 3 around Tasmania. This drive occurred the week before Targa Tasmania. As we arrived in Launceston the night prior to departure the real Targa Tasmania was kicking off.

Working on the basis that a picture tells a 1000 words I’m planning to post some wonderful pictures taken by my wife and navigator Peta Slack Smith.

if there is interest i’ll expand on them with commentary / descriptions.

A few thanks are in order first however.
Sean (mrar) for selling me the C3 in 2020...as I had intended to complete the drive in my Swb 911L.

Porsche Centre Melbourne Classic for fettling the car and getting it prepared for 1600 kms of enthusiastic driving keeping up with much newer / more modern Porsches, and

Carl Jones for fitting the Cn36s I waited so long for and aligning the car so well 73AA8C94-2825-42CA-95CB-F30DA29961F5.jpeg 35119841-79E7-4607-AC3C-B89B12AC65DF.jpeg E080ABF5-0C22-445E-B515-79B3440926DF.jpeg A46DF7E6-6EDD-4FF5-9185-6310B3FFB4E2.jpeg B84F7FF5-CFAF-4863-9524-F6494397FD7E.jpeg C96BAA3B-3874-4019-8B6C-451E1EDBCE4E.jpeg C5EEEAA2-419C-438F-9D87-84639FBE0D53.jpeg

Justin it looks and sounds like you guys gave the car a good work out. As I mentioned to you at the Flinders Car Show I was impressed with the car when Shaun was selling it and think it is fitting that you now own it. Would like to see some more pics. Cheers Nev

Glad to see the car is out and about being enjoyed.
Was only just the other night going through some of the photos on my phone and came across some of the ones of the C3 taken back when selling.
Some of them really pop out.
Flat lid is nice for a change, would like to see and hear more about the trip Justin.

          Hi Justin,

Bucket list for me too !

Was there any 'technical' support on the run ? Some of those remote locations in Tassie if you broke down you'd be in ****ters ditch ...

Not on this one Craig - but there is on the PCA Targa Tour - more on that later.

I have gold NRMA / RACV membership, and as a result of having the car looked after by PCM I have Porsche Roadside Assist too.

I also went through the car from stem to stern, getting a major service and fixing a lot of the little things that had aged / degenerated on the car. So, I think I will be on PCM's christmas card list this year! Quite a few "Porsche units" spent there.

I know Sean serviced it regularly in WA - but the last entry in the service book was 30000k's ago and in 1996! So there were a few old car / lightly used car issues I needed to resolve.

My spacesaver spare tyre was also toast - a new one is $920 + gst and wasn't going to land in time - so I used an old Cookie Cutter and stuck a 60 series Bob Jane all-rounder tyre on it. This curtailed luggage space however- which I needed to get creative with.

The car was great on the trip - it went like a train, and hummed like a well maintained Swiss Watch. It also kept those younger cars honest, and delighted the driver. Even my wife commented on how well the car went and how comfortable and reassuring it felt.

More to come - pleased there's a bit of interest.

Yes correct Peter - I can only take credit for the words - will add some more tonight.

My wife Peta was our team photographer, navigator, 2 way radio operator.

Day 1 was spent in a bit of a daze really ..... I couldn’t believe that I was finally in Tasmania driving an old 911...... and I was also grateful that COVID didn’t set a blow torch to our plans as it had done in 2020.

There were approximately 40 cars broken into groups of 6 or 7, each of these groups had a defined group leader. We had comprehensive route books, and if we chose to, a full Garmin sat nav map - these maps were loaded at our first breakfast about 45 minutes out of Devonport. We found an old Garmin in a drawer and pressed it back into service...it was so 2012 using a Garmin again.

Supplementing the road books we were encouraged to buy 2 way radios so we could communicate with other cars in our group.

You will see a number of pictures of a Tangerine 2.4 T. Being one of the older cars in the group (there were only 3 pre 996s) my C3 and the T (owned by Peter Kopanidis) just seemed to always be hanging out together.....

The T was my wife’s favourite Porsche on the trip (she clearly has good taste) . I suspect that if I had the opportunity to buy an orange early 911 ...... spousal approval would be a mere formality!

                    More to come.

I just drove all those roads in the past 16 days in wait for it...............a Suzuki Baleno, not much fun at all especially when wife #4 hates anything that resembles a curve let alone a corner!!!

Yes Craig your right plenty of no mobile service areas and no traffic so I was praying the Baleno would keep going.

Couldn't get into the pub at Strahan weirdly don't take bookings I preferred Stanley and Binalong Bay as my 2 fav spots, I could live in either but would be bored in 10 minutes I suspect

Some pics from my favourite driving day .... Strahan to Hobart via Derwent Bridge.

it was freezing and I couldn’t get the heater working to my wife’s disgust... so every jacket that could be reached was pressed into service..

The car went brilliantly this day .... as my Dad used to say a Porsche drives like it’s on a cloud when you’re driving under one B813B7E1-6480-4490-905C-4A26E67823A7.jpeg 6A7C7C19-8752-42B8-90DC-9D997D3B77C3.jpeg EC369275-A0D7-4496-871E-60FA5B0275EF.jpeg 87010E09-7CC9-4FEE-B4BE-1812CE1A5F85.jpeg

                              And onto Hobart…..

PCT invited us to a Saturday morning display in front of Parliament House in Hobart….. the proximity to Salamanca Markets was not lost on my wife Peta! I have to thank Our dealer in Hobart Performance Automobiles for the bucket and hose, and our hotel Wrest Point Casino for the wash towels! This was followed by a run to Baskerville which fizzed out because the person who was supposed to open up for us had gone to Launceston for the weekend
