    Whale tail - any value?

    Hey IBers

This comes off the updated 71 I just bought.

Is Fishcop correct in saying it has no value? Looks factory to me, all rubber not fibreglass.

going by the pic it looks to be in good condition. no noticeable bubbles or warps. I think mrar expressed interest first, so maybe contact him.

          Hi Sean

I gave mine to Richard - not in as good as condition as this one though.

          Cheers

Thank you Chris... I thought there was something wrong with me.

These anachronisms are in the same vein as the US 68 pollution gear, 5 blade fans, and heat reactors...

                  Hi Adam,
I saw that hanging on his wall and wondered if it was your one.

I don't think much of them either, the one that came on my car is in really good condition. The lid/tail is hanging on the wall, thought I would grab a spare.

I predict a day when IB's are having their backdated work frontdated & you'll pay big money for whale tails....ha ha

But seriously, I needed one for my SC & they are not easy to find in good condition....$250-$450 is the going rate for one you can simply paint & bolt on.

                        Cheers

I don't mean to come of mean. And I offer a genuine GLWS.

My point with that particular tail was that Porsche themselves didn't want it. It is a semi-soft polyurethane moulding of the fibreglass 3.0 Carrera tail Porsche fitted to most other markets. IT CAN'T BE PAINTED

The poly tail was a compromise added by the dealer for buyers that didn't want the Aussie delivered 'naked' booty and insisted on having a tail. The original flat lids were drilled and fitted with it. Long term use of the tail warped the lid due to its excessive weight. If you're chasing a period correct tail for the era, as per what Porsche wanted on their cars, they are about - the ROW C3 tail is an example.

A wonderful piece of garage art and reference to the burgeoning 70's era of cosmetic safety that began to pervade the motorcar industry. I guess in that vein it is a companion to the IB. But Porsche got the IB project right...

See what letting IB members in has caused?!

I am with you Matt, the rubber CAN BE PAINTED.
And it looks fantastic when done right.
