Splitty Road Trip

Geoff was headed to Rainbow Beach for the week for a break at his mate's place and was kind enough to offer me a berth - twist my arm! First though I went back into Maryborough for a bit more of a look around. I found this amazing old store that is like a timewarp - run by the same family for 101 years. Closed in 1972 pretty much as is is now. The National Trust bought it in the mid 70's and spent about 15 years cataloging the stock and restoring the building. Just amazing! Then on to Rainbow Beach....very pretty place

Geoff's Kombi is the first Kombi I've seen on this trip.....they are thinning out!

Probably time for an update...I spent a few days in Noosa, nice part of the world! Jim Cairns was kind enough to show me his stash and take me out to Palmwood and Ricks Diner for a bit of lunch.

He was even kind enough to let me drive his cracker of a 901 back to his place. Makes me want one again!

From Noosa I headed south and stopped off and the aviation museum in Caloundra for a peep.

Then into Brissie and caught up with Tom Laube for a few beers on the river. The next couple of days were spent wandering around museums and art galleries - all the stuff you do when its not a work trip for a change! image_20098.jpg

From Brisvegas to the Goldcoast where Tim Pritchard was kind enough to put me up and talk **** about Porsches over a few Sailor Jerry's!
Also bumped into my ex. wife (as you do) who was down from Darwin helping out a friend. image_20100.jpg

I was keen to get down to Byron Bay and heading into town I picked up a tail who followed me into the car park on the beach....

After chewing the fat about Kombis with him for 10 minutes I went off to find a place to eat and came back to this..... image_20103.jpg

I'm pretty sure I could live around the Byron area, maybe up in the hinterland somewhere...

In fact I think the universe is telling me to stay here as I broke down heading into Ballina on Saturday.....unfortunately its an engine out job to see whats going on with the clutch as the pedal went straight to the floor on a gear shift.
Glad I took out premium AANT membership before I left as I'm covered for a few days of accommodation, towing and car hire!!

Sorry to hear about the breakdown - they are simple animals, shouldn't take too long to get sorted! I'm in Coffs Harbour tomorrow and Thurs, bed is ready anytime you come through...

So as it turns out I had a few extra days in Byron which was not a bad thing! As its trans out nothing was broken and there was no apparent reason for the clutch failure other than the universe telling me to spend more time there....Believe it or not Thanks to ByronBay Chris you know why

From Byron I popped into Bunjalung National Park and Woody Head and then into Iluka for a quick look and then down to Yamba for the night.

Angourie is 10 minutes out of Yamba and a well known surf break but it was flat as a tack the morning I was there! Made some new friends as well!

From there it was a case of heading south and ducking into a few little spots like Arrawarra Headland etc for a look and a swim. Into Coffs Harbour for the night and caught up with another VW nut - this barn find single cab has only done about 15,000 miles and is for sale at the moment...nice and ratty but drives like new! Also for sale - if anyone has serious interest I can put you in touch with the owner.

Then into Port Macquarie to catch up the very hospitable Mr Fishy ;-) Thanks mate. The Northern Rivers area is just stunning and I could happily spend weeks here looking around....

This shot above was taken from the Seal Rocks lighthouse yesterday. Today I made it into Newcastle and caught up with Duncan, Craig and Ash for lunch at a place called The Garage. Cheers chaps, great to catch up!
