    options for $500 race car?

ok, last night (admittedly after several beers), a genesis of a plan was hatched to field a team of three cars at the regularity style 6 hour events (eg. Aroca at Eastern Creek, Philip Island, Wakefield Park etc),

(these events do not require roll cages etc just fire extinguishers and tow hooks)

    the basic requirements agreed were:

cost - up to $500 per car

wheels - 15" (as the drinkers had about a 100 half worn R spec 15" tyres between them)

performance - must be able to get to the track, do one good lap (*) for qualifying, and then not explode for an hour.

(*) as an example, the wakefield event has a max lap time of 1.25. Nic's C3, my ST, Andy's RS do about 1.11

so, what does the automotive brains trust suggest?

early starters were Datto 180B's and 240K's, old Honda's, some fool mentioned Saab's etc etc

How about a VN/VP commodore? Cast iron, push rod V6 that is just about unbreakable and loads of cheap S/H parts to get it up to spec. They have 15" wheels and 4 wheel discs, 125kw and 1300kg in std trim so should do the reqd lap times.

    Sounds like fun!

      Ryan,

we down here in Victoria and who competed at the Winton event thought of the same thing, but gave ourselves $1000 plus $500 of upgrades!

We thought that there had to be a bevvy of Alfa's out there that could fit the bill. The whole thing ended up being like a Top Gear Challenge!!

Our rules are (as we are thinking of doing it this year for Winton) that you could borrow a race seat and harness, fire ext, etc etc. However your budget could not go over $500 of improvements to the car that you bought!!!!

Could be a lot of fun!!! Lets make a series out of it!!!

God knows that some of the cars that run around in the events are exactly like we are thinking about... the issue is when you have people like Len Cattlin and Teirney fly past you at 150 mph and suck you off the road!!!

$1500!! - didn't you Southerners hear about the GFC! (Note: we did think our budget may be a little unrealistic...)

The VN's got a mention last night also - as did Volvo 240's...

yep, that event sort of got the discussion going.

i love their 'buyback' rule to deter people from spending more than $500 (they also have a 'crush' rule!)
