New Toy...well a bit more than a toy.

    Hi guys,

was up in Sydney last weekend taking delivery of the new boat. Sorry I didnt advise anyone of the visit but was a bit consumed with the new acquistion; going over it, checking inventories and doing all the check sails etc.

She will stay up in Sydney for a few months before we sail her home to Melbourne.

The name will be changed of course which requires a tradition involving large qtys of rum, chanting and other weird rituals to avoid bad luck. Not sure what the PO was thinking when he named her "Caboose". She will be re-christened as "Wavelength". Tender will be named : "Short Wave". For those interested in yachts, she is a Buizen 48, built up in Sydney by the Buizen bros. at Mastercraft Marine, Terry Hills. They still build them today and are up to hull No 36. I have long admired this boat and its been a goal to get one for many years. Am already planning a big trip to sail up to the Kimberleys which is a pretty remote area requiring a big, well provisioned and setup boat.

For those of you who have been aboard the old yacht - Wayfarer V, there is a comparison pic with the 2 side by side. You can see I have upsized considerably. I just hope it fits into the marina pen back at Hobsons Bay in Williamstown.

Cam, Darwin will definitely be in the plans for the trip. It won't be happening too soon though as there are a few things to fit still like air conditioning and a watermaker.

        Very nice Phil!

Although I'll be glad if I never set foot on another ship again, if I had to - that's the way to do it!

AIR CONDITIONING??? Treat it like the R, & open a couple of windows!
          Are you planning a circumnavigation?

Beautiful looking boat, looks like there is plenty of living space.

Jeez Phil, the photo of Wayfarer along side does put it into perspective.

No worries Brett, you will be doing the trip south in plenty of luxury. Had planned on asking if you were interested in another voyage south. Probably during the July school holidays.

Jappy, A/C will be a must have in the tropics if you plan to try sleeping on board. Its the humidity that kills you up north, not the heat like you get out your way in summer.

Not planning a circumnavigation, maybe just around Australia and the South Pacific at this stage. Retirements still a little ways off.

Have another boat in mind for down the track but lets see how this one goes. Next one is the wrong side of US$ 1M.

Imagine around 27-30C and 80-90% humidity.....at night. That lasts from about November to April

We LOVE our air con up here!

V.impressed, as we've discussed previously the Buizen 48 is one of my favourite cruising yachts, very seaworthy large enough for extended cruising but small enough to me managed short-handed.

Was trying to convince my wife last week that this is a great time to buy a cruising yacht (and a 2.9lt engine for my car) but as usual wasn't all that successful.

Lovely boat Phil - and I'll bet it wasn't far from the "good" side of $1m.

Yes Paul, its a good time to be buying this sort of item. The broker told me he just sold a very large cruiser that was asking $1.5M and sold for $1M. Seems its mainly boats and cars at the upper end of the scale where the bargains are to be found.

There are certainly way more boats up in Sydney in this league. Also looks like Riviera is in deep poo with plenty of their boats on the market and no sales of new boats for some time. But I guess you are looking for a sailing boat ?

The great thing I liked about this Buizen was the electric/hydraulic winches and in mast furling making it almost manageable by on person. But 48 feet is still a lot of boat to sail and it weighs in at 15 tonnes.

Peter, suffice to say, I did get it for a good price and the deal clincher was the vendor taking my boat as a trade - an almost impossible ask in these tough times.

And that boat moored in front of me was a Selene 55 trawler style - about $2.8 M. Where's yours moored again ??

..........and I forgot to mention that the proposed re-naming of the boat to Wavelength and tender to Shortwave were absolutely brilliant (noting the dual meaning of "wave" to your lasertech business and of course the nautical connotation)

                            .................so who thought of them?

Peter, I managed to dream them up myself after a lot of time searching the Net and yacht name sites. I always love to see well thought out boat names, especially when they have a clever name for the tender too.

Like a large powerboat in the US named "Double D's" with a tender called: "Sea Cup".

One of my pet hates about boat names is how well they sound over a radio and how easy it is to comprehend the name and spell it.

I looked at plenty of names but needed something in tune with the style of this yacht and not too modern, yet having a reference to my business, which after all, gave me the means to afford the purchase.

                              Now, to the Rum Ceremony....
