I used to religiously use my little manual Delongi, but I've been converted to using a French press (Bodum).

A barrista I know here is Bris gave me some hints on grinding, and I have a little account with DiBella Coffee (at their roasting warehouse) in Brisbane. The combo of the correct grind and timing/temp with the press gives me a first class long black. And the ease of clean up is great (straight into the dishwasher).

Atomic - stove top circa 1960's. Makes great coffee albeit with some typical Italian (eg. Alfa Romeo) randomness...

There is also a new version with improved internals.

I have had a stainless steel Saeco Venezia (I believe they are made by Gaggia??) espresso machine for about 6 years and it has never skipped a beat.

I paid around $500 from memory.

I've owned both a krups & delongi however have recently bought a nespresso with the frothy machine thingo & love it !!! I was a little dubious at first however it's so easy to make coffee & clean that it's a winner for me. Most coffee machines are like Ferrari's that you never drive because the outcome is so unpredictable & they are such high maintenance. You could argue that the nespresso is the Commodore of coffee machines but at 5.30am that suits me just fine !! Good luck with it.....

We bought a Nespresso for our office and I like it for exactly the reasons you describe Matt. I can choose my own coffee pods and stash them away from unscrupulous co-workers.

And it's those same unscrupulous co-workers that don't clean machines when they're finished... the Nespresso solves that (I hid the hard-to-clean milk frothy thing and make them nuke their milk).

I got sick of soaking and cleaning calcified and burnt milk from equipment, and I don't take milk!

We also have a Saeco Via Venezia machine which makes a great coffee but being a full manual thing it takes too long to make multiple cups. Generally use a Bodum but John is spot on with his comments about the grind etc. A good burr grinder set exactly for the application makes a huge difference.

Jeff, at the risk of getting your mental agonies crossed, I thought I would suggest you buy a clapped out one and do it up. By the way just how close to finished is your 69E project.
