watch enthusiasts, interesting thread on EarlyS

i know a couple of us are in to mechanical watches

Today a Rolex Daytona (model ref. 6263) aka "Paul Newman" sold for $1.1 million at the Christies auction in Geneva. The average price for all Daytonas at the auction was $240,000. See: http://blog.perpetuelle.com/auction-watch/rolex-daytona-ref-6263-paul-newman-sells-for-record-1-1-million/ I'd be willing to trade my Rolex Daytona (manufactured in 1972) and purchased new by me for your 911s longhood (in similar condition). I'll even give you a choice of two dials:
    Craig
    12/1969 E based Vintage Racer
    1972 2.4E Targa project
    1973 911 2.4E for the road

I think Cam mentions in one of the posts in that thread, Rolex is a high entry point but clearly if you buy the right year it may pay off, I put my money into Heuer, easier for me to justify.

Nice try by the original poster on that thread! A 6263/6264 in that condition would be a $25-35K watch tops! The recent Christie's auction in Geneva threw up some amazing vintage Rolex prices, but the Daytona's they sold there for big money were very special & rare watches.

BTW, $25k is still a lot for a watch, I'll admit!

I don't think its a coincidence that many classic car lovers also have a passion for old mechanical watches.
For me its an appreciation of the craftsmanship, the heritage and the effort people put into making these pieces.

I'm not too much into the bragging/showing off category and always found the Rolex a bit too 'bling'. I love the fact I wear my IWC almost everyday and hardly anyone knows what it is. But just like I have with my 901, every glance at the dial makes me happy!

Maybe time for a separate thread: "Show us your watch" ?

Bought my first Rolex Submariner in Hong Kong early '70's. Paid $295 for it. Should have bought a few of them but $295 was a lot of cash back then.

Sold it years later for $900 and thought that was a good deal. Should have waited .

Also had an old Tudor Chronograph (virtually made by Rolex). Traded that one on a GMT II with a Pepsi dial. Should have kept that one too.

I agree with Patrick that the appreciation of mechanical watches tend to go with love of old 911's.

Current watches in the auto winder are:
          GMT II gold/SS
          Explorer white dial
          Panerai GMT 40mm
Breitling Navitimer (new in-house 01 movement)
          Longines "Dolce Vita" chronograph

            Nice collection Phil.
That Longines, is it black/black or white dial with a brown strap?
I love that Panarai, but am surprised to see they have a 40mm version; I always thought they were 50 or over - which is too big for my wrist.

I'm still looking for a Heuer Carrera '64 or Siffert Autovia, but i currently have:
            - IWC Spitfire Mark XV (white dial with brown leather strap)
            - Chopard Mille Miglia in Titanium (8915) with rubber dunlop tire pattern strap.

Also, if anyone ever sees a Titanium IWC Porsche Design (37xx) from the 90s somewhere in Australia... I'm definately interested!

I'm not even going to start on my collection. It's a little embarrassing...

Surely there is only one choice - maybe two - for this forum?
