The other day i thought my PM posts were lagging and slow
however i have now worked it out ( it helps to read ll the available info on a page

When you post a PM the message stays in your "out box" until it is read at which time it transfers to your "sent" box
So a message hanging around in the "out" box has been sent but not yet read.
I suppose that also allows you to cancel any unread PM messages until they are red
