Totally off-topic, but got to meet and listen to a talk by Cpl Ben Roberts-Smith VC this morning. Fantastic speaker and absolutely enthralling to hear about his experiences.

In a world where we raise up footballers and other moron sportsmen, I'm really pleased to know we have much better role-models for our kids such as BRS!

I know we've got servicemen and ex-servicement on here, and others with family that paid the ultimate price for their bravery. The talk from BRS really highlighted for me the calibre of those people.

It's a pity you missed out Marcus. He's an excellent speaker and seriously imposing. In a room of 200 people he was by far and above the tallest and widest person in the room... Having done some time as a young guy training for a few specialist positions in the Police I know the usual body shape that emerges from the crowd. I'm amazed that a guy of his physical size has so obviously excelled in that particular field of endeavour.

Whenever I visit the War Memorial in Canberra, I always spend an hour or 2 in the VC memorial room reading stories about the soldiers who earned this highest honour like Ben.

He is in illustrious company and I can only begin to imagine what he went through on the day he earned his medal.
