    ok, just for a laugh...

    sub-$20k Cayenne anyone?

came up in conversation as an alternative to the rubbish ford territory my brothers and I are sharing...

aside from its current condition (unknown), presumably the maintenance costs would be horrible...

and no, i probably wouldn't do it either...

A close Porsche mate of mine has just bought a 10 year old 175k Pepper-car as an 'allrounder' to tow/camp/daily drive. I think he paid around $30k for a full whistles and bells Cayenne S Turbo V8. It is in super condition, runs like a top and ticks a lot of boxes. Time will tell whether it's a good idea or not, but for the buy-in it's worth the effort to find out

Rich, I have a Cayenne & have been happy with it. Like all Porsches if you get a decent one they tend to be very robust. I over maintain my cars, fix everything as soon as it's broken and do services every six months regardless and it costs me about $2000 a year using an independent. Certainly cheaper than my previous BMW X5 and Range Rover !!! I suspect most have been well looked after so I say do your homework and go for it

My Cayenne Turbo has been fantastic, good servicing being the key.
Only 90k km in 10 years helps, but it hasn't missed a beat.

Darren down at AutoCoupe in eltham knows Cayennes and I guess he would do a good PPI on one for you or alert you as to what to look for when buying a S/H one.

Yes and reportedly only had three female drivers, taking the kids to school and never ever confirming that 0-100kms/hr time ...

It is becoming that these large 4WD SUVs are becoming almost throw away items as they reach 8-10 years, with the costs of maintenance and repair spiralling, and retained value plummeting.

I am looking at the new VW Touareg today, Jeep and also a new Merc ML350, but may get none of them and run the one we have into the ground and defer the decision.

I guess fuel economy on a Cayenne turbo does get annoying after a while as city driving would be hard on fuel and the temptation to sue all that grunt just too tempting. Kinda like some members here have said about their Benz C 63's.

BUt the devaluation of a Cayenne Turbo from around $250K down to $30K is pretty amazing. How much more would you expect to lose ?

Does make it tempting to get one without tying up too much cash. Wonder what annual service costs are and what parts need replacing after high kms ??

Can any current Cayenne owners comment on this ?

Looked the Merc MLs (250, 350, etc), the VW Touareg, Jeep Grand Cherokee and a bunch of others. Not over the moon about most of them. The VW 180 seemed good value and well spec'ed. Wife liked it too. The ML are on a run out with new models coming through (GLK, GLE, etc). We have had a good run with our ML320CDI.

Not seen the Audi or Volvo offerings at this stage.

The column gear shift on the ML's (and Benz's generally) drives me nuts. You'd want to be comfortable with one before buying.

Paul, you do get used to it. Sheryl has an A200 which is a great car and I often drive it. U just need to get used to it.

Was told its a safety thing in the event of a side impact, you dont risk being impaled on the gear shift in the centre console.
