    Interesting Route Melbourne to Sydney

    All,

I need some advice - I need to take a 911 back up to Sydney in the next month and don't simply want to drone up the Hume.

I would like to the driver to be fun and scenic, but I do need it also to be relatively swift - as I have things to do an people to see. One option is for me to drive up and spectate at the Retro Speedfest at Sydney Motorsport Park.

A mate of mine is going to be navigating.

The car I'll be in isn't mine sadly and is on r spec tyres... so I don't want to tempt fate and drive through the alpine regions and either get caught (or worse come to grief).

I had thought about doing it in a day but think I'd be better off stopping in Canberra and then doing the rest of the drive the following morning.

    Thoughts anyone?

Thought one: R Spec tyres are road legal - nothing to be caught over.

Thought two: Drive from Melbourne and either take the South Gippsland highway to Sale or the Princess Highway right through to Bairnsdale. Bairnsdale via Bruthen and stop at the Bullant Brewery, keep going to Cann River. From Cann River head up the Monaro highway through Cooma to Canberra... You're looking at between 10 and 15 hours depending on stops and 'side roads'.

I think he is referring to being caught by the snow on those tires I certainly would not be keen to have ay snow or similar around when running my Avons

head east young man then do as john suggests - though you have two choices time permitting

            Cann River Bomabala Cooma etc

or head up coast a bit further and take Brown mtn to nimmatabel cooma

or a slight variation via candelo brown mtn nimmatabel

I took my C2.7 (after one month of ownership) over Dead Horse Gap (nr Thredbo), and there was occasional patches of snow on the road. It was downright horrible.

Best route (when snow is a possibility) is definitely via Cann River. The run from Cann up to Cooma is fantastic - even at night.

Here is a shot of the road heading south after Cooma. There are plenty more KM's that looks just like this and its a fast road. Just lookout for wildlife.

Yes Hugh, its been 10 years and was a great road trip. I agree it would be nice to do that one again; up thru Tumut and over the Snowy Mtns Hwy then up to Canberra/Sydney and back home via Cooma, Bombala and Cann River.

I remember we got home late and that was a very long drive for one day coming home from Sydney, or did we stop in Canberra before heading home ?

Another pic from the trip up over Snowy Mtns Hwy. This one dated 28/7/2005. we were lucky there was only a small amount of snow that year.
