Forgive me for my impure thoughts... 993 tip

Had a shocker of a commute home last night where i happened to be driving Peter's 6spd 993...

And then i had a day off today, where i really didn't have that much planned...

So went porsche window shopping! Not ready to buy as need to finish the houses first.

Had the crazy thought that Claire would be at least willing to drive a 993 tip - so thought I'd go and see what the 'slush boxes' are all about.

And it actually wasn't that bad!!!

This example had a bit of a clunk from 2nd down to 1st, which tells me not all is right... But other than that was much easier around town. No, it wasn't quite as responsive as Peter's... But his also doesn't have cats on the exhaust anymore either, which might account for something.

Don't understand why they only did 4sp... But i am sure you'd get used to the ratios... Would really like to know what it's like up lake mountain rather than around richmond.

And really didn't like the +/- buttons on both sides of the steering wheel - left as up and right as down would be more logical.

On the finance side, they are cheaper, more plentiful, and surely will go up in value (if not as fast as a manual).

So... What am i missing? Are they really that bad as a second porsche to complement the longhood?

I think the only downside I would think of, is if the tip transmission goes, I think the repair bill would be eye watering.

Good point... Would it be any worse than a normal gearbox rebuild though?

Often those early 'tips' just need a good service and new filters and seals. I found my 6sp 997 a pain around town and you would want an auto of some kind if that was where you had to drive most of the time. In the hills, a different car.

Merv is mostly right. As with most autos, a good oil change and new filters will help to a point, but once the clutch plates wear and start to slip, then I think it will be a big job to fix, with specialist work. Anyone can fix a manual box, but autos can get a bit more tricky to do properly. Other than that, it would probably be a great thing.
