Congratulations to Mr Curnick and Winter - Mt Buller Hill Climb

I had a number of calls over the weekend from Mr C who was competing in the Mt Buller Hill Climb (i think just to rub it in because I wasn't there). He was concerned his times we a bit slow in the slippery unfamiliar conditions. Now having seen the final results and the cars that were competing, I think 7th in Classic behind Rex and Mr Pye isn't a bad effort at all.

It is well known that a really good time is 10 mins. Their final run. 10.05 !
I think the Cibies will have to come off for next year....

    Well done Mssrs C and W !

PS most interesingly, you were pipped by a Mazda 3 Diesel.

No photos as yet, but I'm sure some will appear, perhaps even some film.

thanks guys. we also picked up a win in category 2!

it was a really tough event. in light of recent tragedies, we went down there with the goals of racing safely and coming back with a straight car.

the course is something else, 16 kms and the longest straight in our notes was 100m! it is also a huge climb and non turbo, non efi cars like ours start to run very rich and lose power near the top. it was even harder on our mate's first generation RX-7.

it also has a very very slippery surface (depending on the time of day!) - pretty much like driving on a wet circuit. seriously.

we chased setup all of saturday and ended up with basically a full wet setup (hard rear, soft front, lots of fuel, lots of rear brakes, higher than normal tyre pressures etc etc) and still struggled with understeer and front brake lock up.

our best run was the result of finally feeling comfortable in the car setup, deciding that you can't drive an old 911 timidly and going for it. the harder we pushed it seemed the more grip we generated.

quite a few stacks - but thankfully nobody hurt.

            videos to come...

ok, here is the traditional view of our second best run:

              1st half
Tarmac rally and circuit racing footage from Australia - mainly of early Porsche 911's.

              2nd half
Tarmac rally and circuit racing footage from Australia - mainly of early Porsche 911's.

and here is an alternative view of our best run (which shows how steep the course is).

              1st half
Tarmac rally and circuit racing footage from Australia - mainly of early Porsche 911's.

              2nd half
Tarmac rally and circuit racing footage from Australia - mainly of early Porsche 911's.

So would you go back and do it again?

                    Thanks Marty

Cam - Not 100% but I think so. It would be nice to arrive up with the car set up properly for the conditions and be able to go hard from the start.

Oh yeah, and beat 10 minutes...

                      Cool !

I think the roads are much steeper than we are used to rallying on ?? Perhaps that's why there is so much understeer ??

I liked the second camera angle, it shows how fast you were going.

I think that may have been part of it - plus:

                        inherently low grip surface; and
lower overall speeds (ie. didn't use 5th gear once and was back to 1st several times).

The ave speed of the winning car (Lambo superlegera) was 114kmh, whereas Adelaide and T Tas need chicanes etc to stay under the 132 kmh FIA limit.

                              Round 2 is Wrest Point
                              Round 3 is Rally Tas
Round 4 is Targa Tas (double points)

We're not planning to do the Championship, but it would be interesting to have a go one day.
