Luddite question - setting up an Avatar

How do I add a picture so it shows on the lhs of the message...

Somewhere in my profile I assume?

In your profile, which can be accessed from the top right of the index page, there is a section at the bottom (need to scroll down) that is for your avatar. You just need an image that is max 80 pixels X 80 pixels. You can then upload it to the forum.
