Best Mechanic / Auto Elecrician - Sydney

    Hi There,

Just got the 71T home last night from Melbourne and seems there are a few mechanical issues, notably; 1) oil leak into engine bay - no idea what, but could be an overfilled oil tank, and 2) Weber carby's are running like Dogs (and very sick dogs at that). As usual, there are 15 other odd jobs needing attention, like door locks, ignition switch iffy and so on.

My question is; Who are considered the 'best' in Sydney for this type of specialist work? I do know Autohaus, and Cavaco, but wondered what other options there are out there for specialist work. Also, does anybody have a great auto electrician that can work in a period correct fashion and do these old cars 'right'??? I want the car out back the way it left the factory, and don't want modern updates and so-on.

Perhaps either of my mentioned options are the right choice, but before having the car sent off, I wanted to ask you, the experts as to who you get your specialist engine / electrical work done?

    Many thanks,

    Adam

Adam, dont be too averse to heeding the suggestions of knowledgeable mechanics as some changes/upgrades are well worth doing. Such as hydraulic cam chain tensioners and various other mods that can prolong the engine life and improve upon some of the "factory" spec items.

When I rebuilt my 2.4E engine, we wisely used a 964 oil pump to vastly improve oil pressure. You cannot see it but you do have peace of mind that the engine wont be oil starved when pushing it to it limits.

On the electrical side, the old headlight switches are prone to failure and the inclusion of a (hidden) relay will improve your light output and avert a potential serious electrical problem.

There is nothing wrong with using the wisdom of hindsight (and modern technology) to fix some of these 45+ yr old problems that will improve the enjoyment and longevity of your car.

      where are you located ?

i live in Melbourne now but am an ex Sydney-sider.

and I agree with Phil.... the wonderful thing about 911s is that evolved. You can fit later bits that are demonstrably better, but aren't necessarily visible.

Adam, also with Phil on this. Relays on the headlamps increase delivered voltage. Starter relay takes the pressure off old ignition switches, New earth leads are critical, probably new plug leads, clean out the carby idle and main jets and check their bores with a pin gauge (cheap but invaluable), check float levels, mixtures, etc. Not sure which carbs you have on your car, but there are several easy to follow instructions on these matters. Then you become someone who can do many things yourself to keep these old cars running right. If can do none of these, we all started there. At least ask to watch the mechanic if possible.

if rebuilding an engine, that is a specialist job for most, but always fit a larger oil pump, later cam chain tensioners and high quality valve cover gaskets.

Depends upon where you live / work really.

I can recommend Autohaus Hamilton and BWA - based on my own experiences....

Cavaco is also good - several friends in the Eastern Suburbs and Inner West speak very highly of them.

I've had major work done at BWA and Autohaus and they've both been great.

BWA organised an auto electrician to come in and tidy up some minor stuff on my '68 and they were good.

Heard good things about Cavaco, and met with Andre at The Pit Exchange - old school trained Porsche mechanic and very straight shooter by all appearances.

Thanks all, this is really fantastic. I am located in Sydney, near the centre! I am not far off Cavaco and Autohaus, but I wanted to see where / whom others are using.

+1 for Cavaco. They've looked after my 73E for the last 8 years doing mechanical and electrical work and always done an excellent job.
