    915 Rebuilder Recommendation?

    Hi Guys

Edging closer to rebuilding my 915 gearbox. I have two... one early mag and a later SC aluminium unit. This gives me some choices relating to ring and pinions and gearsets.

I'm considering building up the mag case unit with the later internals and mechanical speedo drive, and keeping the SC drive flanges. Which R&P should I go with?

At the risk of conjecture and dissension - who do we like to build our boxes? I was going to do this myself, but time/life just doesn't slow down, so I'm going to outsource. I am prepared to remove and crate these boxes up and send 'em where-ever...

Oh and would anyone like to have a stab at what I can expect to spend; presuming the worst and lots of bits need renewing?

    Ta!

    Cheers

    John,

I trust Phil Hearn at AutoCoupe (forum sponsors) in Melbourne to do all my early car mechanical work.

he recently rebuilt my 915 box from the 72 E coupe which had many issues from the previous "expert" rebuild. It required a lot of new bearings, synchros, sliders and also a new housing. We had to also upgrade the speedo pickup and added one of Phil's upgrades to assist in reducing clutch effort.

There was not much change from $5000.00 but of course it depends on how many $400 bearings and sliders/synchros you need.

Phil has the correct factory tools for setting up the crown wheel/pinion backlash and without these, you are simply guessing. You dont want to know how much a new (or even good used) CW & pinion costs these days.

I ma sure if you shipped it to Phil, he would give you an accurate quote fro a rebuild after he had stripped it and inspected its insides.

Click on the link above for his contact details.

John I reckon my box rebuild was also in the region of $5 grand.

Might as well chuck an LSD in while you're in there!

Any reason why not T&D given they are in Brisvegas?

Thanks guys. As there is only on decent place in Brisbane (T&D), I'd like to know what other choices are out there for the sake of a couple of hundred bucks freight. You know what they say about competition etc...

A couple of the guys from the P club up here have offered me a hand and tools if do want to have a go. So that's still an option... It'll be the only option that leaves me with enough $ to add a LSD

I have some Wevo goodies to go in it as well.

John, just read that thread, what a laugh. Welcome to the asshat club.

Some guys just never listen do they ? Why does he bother keeping on posting replies ?

Maybe its 'Tabs' back again ? Although he was on the early S board.

I am sure you just need a half inch drive socket set to rectify your ride height though!!
