Small pot blasters are available for small sand blasting jobs. Look a bit like a spray gun but you fill the pot with sand rather than paint. Very messy proccess but handy. Far too slow and messy for large areas. I think John (fishcop) is using a pot blaster for small rust areas. Maybe he can post some pics of the mess after even a small area is cleaned up.

Next time you are out in a heavy industrial area try and get a look at the sand blasting area of a metal fabrication shop. Typically a big shed with black blasting sand spread everywhere and some poor operator sweating in a space suit.

Sand blasting is also really good at removing skin! A mate of mine still carries a nasty scar on his arm after being a bit careless with a medium size blaster 25 years ago. He thought it would be a good idea to sand blast an old Torana he was restoring rather than pay an expert.

Skill is also required to ensure the panels don't get too hot and distort. A real problem for doors, hoods, roof etc. You also need to etch primer on the blasted surface very quickly as the fresh surface will almost start rusting before your eyes.
