Sorry, back onto the topic of the original car. Aside from the money issues (let's just assume that it's done for the love of it :-))... how far gone does a car have to be before isn't worth doing?

In the rolls royce world (maybe this also applies to 356's?), you would only need a crank case and a wheel hub and someone would try to recreate the car... costing a small fortune which is not recoverable in the realisable value for the car.

            my thoughts

firstly, you WILL end up financially upside down in restoring a car, any car. but it has other non-monetary advantages, eg: its fun, you learn a lot, you can build what you want, you know what its in it, you can do it at your own pace as budget permits etc

secondly, a full on resto will usually eclipse the base car purchase cost (particularly something like this E). this, plus the fact that it costs about the same to resto a T E or an S, means you should choose your base car and level of resto carfeully.

as an example, no matter how well you restore it, the ebay 911E will likely always be non AU delivery, LHD converted, non matching numbers and not especially rare/desirable. a good candidate for a 'light' driver/hotrod resto but not much else in my view.

I have heard from Phil who has looked at the car and your last few words were what he said "not good" and I think he meant for anything.

Apparently its not too flash as you might expect for being outside not covered for many years.

I will let him fill in the gaps

Yes, I just returned from looking at the car. have added some pics below. I wouldn't bother buying it any any price.
Seller said he was offered $10K sight unseen. I said "take it".

the car is actually a 70 911E (Oct 69 build) Rego papers show it as a 70 also. Engine looks like ts out of a 1975 911S. it has CIS injection and is supposedly 2.7.

                Gbox is a 901 5 speed.

Rust issues are everywhere, floors, front pan, rear engine lid, front bumper and possibly sills but couldn't get under it to really check. It has 14" wheels, and maybe not original Fuchs but copies. Interior seats are both ripped but repairable. dash is all wrong and made up after the conversion. carpets are wet, mouldy and stuffed. All chrome has been blacked out, Paint is white but a cheap respray. engine hasnt been turned over for at least 2-3 years, probably seized.

Even at $5K I would be very scared to buy this car.

Seller seems to think its well priced at $11K start price but no bids so far. said he would relist it if no bids off eBay

Only redeeming factor I saw was the S calipers it had on the front.

And I agree with Ryans comments that it costs the same to restore a T as an S so choosing the right original car is always important.

This car could well have been an Aussie delivery RHD car but left to languish as it has in the open for many years, has basically stuffed it for the seller. I dont know what he will actually get for it but some poor sole might just buy it over the phone or email.

                    Not for the faint hearted.

Now Richard, you said you were after a 'fixer upper " didnt you ??

This looks like it shouldnt be regarded as anything more than a parts car.
The best value is probably in its chassis plate !

                        Cheers,
                        Dennis.
