    Tacho Bounce

My tacho needle bounces around like a mad thing when I'm giving the old girl a boot full.

Any easy fix for this and is this happening to anyone else's machines?

    Cheers

I had exactly the same problem - progressively got worse and worse - took it to Mike at Spyer - approx 30sec later - he had determined poor connection on the points wire (poor manufacturing crimp - it just pulled out in his hands with a little tug). 2 mins laters, new points fitted and gapped - problem gone.

Now having electronic points fitted anyway.

as andrew said, if the tacho bounces at idle - its normally a sign that the points are closing up.

if the tacho bounces at high revs - its normally a sign that the magnets which drive the needle are a bit tired. not uncommon in old cars.

the 'easy' fix is to send it to nth hollywood speedo's for a rebuild. maybe try the yellow pages for someone in Aust?

Howard Instruments in West Heidelberg (opp the old VDO factory) are trained VDO insturement techs and can easily rebuild the instruument sin our old cars. Maybe not to the standard of Nth Hollywood Speedo but somewhat cheaper and faster I would guess.

they are also into tarmac raliies and motor racing in general. I believe they also have a workshop in Geelong.

Ther eis also another shop in Ringwood that I believe does good instrument work. Phil Hearn knows them and has their details. Anyone else know them ??

My instruments on the Targa were done in Ringwood. As you know they are perfect.

I think the place is called Ringwood Speedometer or similar. Anyway, its opposite the corner of Maroondah hwy and Heatherdale road (500m from the Healey Factory).
