Are LHD Porsches now worth more than RHD?

Just curious . . . USA and Germany together are a bigger market for Porsches than UK, Aus, S Africa, etc. On the other hand, they received a lot more car supply.

When I look at the prices being achieved at Amelia Island and other US auctions they seem to be higher than we get here at top dollar locations like Classic Throttle or Duttons, even if you assume a constant Aussie dollar exchange rate at something like 80 cents.

For example there is a beautiful 73 2.4S, matching numbers, etc, at Gooding & Co right now and they are quoting US$200 - $240k + 10% buyers premium. That's equivalent to A$244k - $293k at current 0.9 exchange rate.

Isn't the old saying "it's only worth as much as somebody is willing to pay for it" still true? If somebody wants a RHD they will pay for it and same for LHD. Supply and demand. I prefer RHD and I would pay a premium for that.

LHD has surged on world market but try buying an Aussie 2.4S you may get a shock if you can find one.

I was offerred my concourse 2.4S Targa back recently at $250K think my old 2.4S Coupe would be heading towards $300k given that an RS is now $600k..

If you have a LHD car you want to sell you want the dollar to tank top 60c then your looking great!

I hadn't realised that there was such a big gap between 2.2S and 2.4S . . . we have seen several 2.2S sell for $160k-$180k in past 12 months

Very much a world market now for good 911's. And the biggest market demand is certainly from LHD countries.

Will be interested to see what price early 911's are listed for at the Essen show later this month. Always a good litmus test.

Yes, the guys at Autohaus told me that DB's 2.2S is on its way back to the UK. But still, that was $165k . . . a lot lower than the $250k+ prices that seem to be happening in the US for LHD minters, esp 2.4S.

One other thought on this: that white 73S targa has been sitting at CTS for the past 3+ months at "just" $144k and not moving.

I have to believe that if it was a LHD car in the States it would have been snapped up in an instant.

I think you're right Nick, but the geographic differences, build differences, rego requirement differences, duties/taxes and currencies actually start to cloud it - you're almost not dealing with "apples and apples". That same targa located in England could be worth another 20%, but the UK import duties for example make it prohibitive (that's why no too many RHD cars leave these shores for the UK).

Hopefully only the ones that have come from there to start with like Dennis car as import back in is not so bad.

I am banking on it one day for my UK 69S when the pound get back to 35c aussie like once before.
