    another set of questions...

    Hi All

Just a couple of other questions...

    1) As a temporary solution to my steering wheel, thought I would try (roughly) re-stitching the leather. Any ideas on where to get the black thread?

    2) What should the oil level meter in the car do whilst idling/running? Idle shows oil (5-7L), when it's running the oil level drops to basically nothing. Oil pressume is within what the owners manual suggests. Temperature is what I would think is the cool side of normal... but it has been cold everytime I have run the car.

    3) The indicator return switch is not always holding, presume this is going to mean replacement rather than repair? Also think they are one of those hard to find bits? Have all the bits off the car, so will go and try and understand how it works.

    4) What should fuel consumption be for a 2.8? I think it sucked down about 9 litres in 35 miles or so... none of it would have been particularly efficient driving, and using a very small sample size. Also, the stutter could always have been some cr&* going through the carbs, I stopped pretty quick (like 30 seconds) and filled her up from a can... no more stutter.

    5) The bolt that holds my starter motor on is borderline. It is too long, and is getting rounded. I really don't want it to get fully rounded and have to drop the engine out! It is bad enough having to hug the gearbox to get the damn thing in/out (someone at porsche has some explaining to do!). What is the bolt and how hard are they to find?

    6) The windscreen washer pump seems to be running, but no water comes out (have tried the pin in the jets trick). Any suggestions?

Sorry, more than a couple of questions there, but any ideas would be great!

    Thanks

Not sure about the rest of your questions, but I had the same problem with the washers. Was blocked near the pump (rather than the jets) - pretty easy to fix.

      1. Try Blackmans in Richmond they did the Targa one for me

      2. Don't worry about that guage at all let the car idle for approx 1 minute after driving then check the oil youself. Don't overfill the oil either.

      3. Fuel consumprtion will probably be eless than 20mpg with a 2.8 and a lead foot. Fill the tank, drive the car and check the mileage and report back. It sure sounded sweet however.

      4. Replace the bolt Porsche will sell them for sure I will look up the part number you need PET the electronic parts finder. I have a copy you can use.

      5. Replace all plastic hose and the jets and the little piece that attached to the jets and you should be back in action. Total cost for all that will be about $50.00

My indicator switch has the same problem.

I know that Bob Wyms sells news ones for about $450.

Anyone know of a simple fix for these so they hold 'on' again?

          Rich,

Leo, who was out at the workshop saturday (who owns the red 68S) showed me his restiched steering wheel which he did himself. he said he bought the needles and thread locally and did the job himself one night in front of the TV. Perhaps Leo will reply here and advise where he found the needle/thread.

I agree with Marcus on the washer problem in that its probably blocked at the pump inlet due to residues from "washer additives" glugging up in the bottom of the washer bottle. Take it apart and give it a good clean.

re the indicator problem, thats pretty normal for a 35 yr old car and is probably only fixed with a new part.

Good to hear you found the errant bolt from the starter motor. re the locating bolt with the socket head, its probably a special length . Phil H had one in his workshop off another engine which you could measure up and go to Keables in the city or other bolt specialist and try to find a replacement one. I would not go for a hex head bolt as you could risk rounding it off in the future, Better to go with what Dr Porsche designed. theres a reason for it. But make sure you use the correct size metric tool as I suspect the original bolt got damagd by someone using an imperial allen wrench rather than metric.

And yes, petience is critical when working on these cars. if you get frustrated, walk away and come back later.

            Thanks everyone so far...

We had some success today... managed (quite easily) to get the driver's side windscreen washer working. I probably cheated (and suspect it isn't the nicest way of doing it either) - bike pump connected to the hose... blew that blockage all over the windscreen! The other side will have to wait til next weekend.

But, a minor set back... whilst refitting the steering wheel, the horn now only works on the left side...
