    Carbs resto

    Hi all,

I have bitten the bullet and decided to fix up my old IDTP carbs instead of purchasing new versions.
    $$$ decision.

    A quick question though.

I presume the coating is Alodine on the body.
Does anyone know of a place that sells it on the Sunshine Coast or even better has some in stock at home. Alodine 1201 by memory.
WO 1 is also needed so looking for some of that.

Has anyone Cad plated these carb bodies? If so is it a viable option.
The cost of Alodine etc may be too much.

    Thanks

    Jim

To add has anyone used Gibbs oil on carb body assy?
Reapply every 6 months or so?

    Just an option.

I'll have a chop at your questions Jim

Good job using what you have - I've got IDTPs on both my cars and they are easily adaptable.

Alodine is a specialist product now controlled under environmental and safety regs... It's pretty carcinogenic too. Though I'm sure the odd backyard shed may still have some of it sitting about. It is still in use by the aviation industry and some enquiries there may help you out. I know we have at least one member on the board intimately acquainted with aviation construction and metal processing, but I'll let him stick his hand up rather than out him

Genuine cadmium plating is now banned in Australia. My brother is a LAME (and commercial chopper pilot) and he is pretty sure the last cad plating operation was in Melbourne, but is no longer able to offer the service. Anything that MUST be cad plated is done off-shore.

I'm a fan of Gibbs and use it on all my alloy and mag components. It is as good as they say, but I'd be more inclined to use it every 3 months if you're driving your car regularly.

Wow. During my aircraft apprenticeship we used.to bath in it. Then wash it off.with MEK.
So gibbs may be the best option then.
What about a clear coat POR15? If they make it.
        Thanks for the input John.

And you didn't stash a little bit away?

I wouldn't put anything on the carb bodies Jim. Get them ultrasonically cleaned and hit them with Gibbs. Unless you can send them to someone Archerfield or one of the other aircraft industrial areas (Caboolture?)

How bad is the coating on them? I was quite surprised with the factory finish on mine after a bath.

Body itself is not too bad. Corrosion under the gaskets etc.
Not cleaned up fully yet. Had a guy in Maroochydore trial clean one body in an ultrasonic bath. He failed on an epic scale. They came back in a bad state.
So back to square one with the cleaning process.

It does look nice if they come up well, but getting the throttle shaft bushed and butterflys set correctly will be a better payback IMHO.

Bang on Chris. Always function over form but you have to make sure you can sell them if needed in the future. You just never know.
