    Instrument refurb

Wondering has anyone used Howards Instruments in Melbourne?

They have a lot of info on their site about refurbs on pre A and 911 gauges.

I just need glass cleaned on the inside and seals redone to stop fogging in winter ... faces are fine.

    Cheers,

    Ben.

        Hi Ben.

I have not used them yet but I called them a couple of weeks ago about repairing my clock that's not working.

I spoke to the owners wife - knowledgable and pleasant.

However, she said they are super busy with a big backlog of work and they are about to go on 3 weeks vacation.

          Hi Ben

Lots of forum members have used them.

Picked up my my speedo from them a couple of weeks ago - if you are not in a rush then the work seems good.

Happy to post some pics if you would like to see their work?

          Cheers

Many thanks for all the responses.

Justin - Brookvale sounds very easy - let me know of you find any info.

Adam - interested to see the work for sure, but not if its a hassle as May end up going to Brookvale.

            Cheers,

            Ben.

Hi Mark, I took the clock from my 911L to Ringwood speedos to be told it was unrepairable I got onto Google and found out how to do it myself, it was easy. I just had to clean the contact points on the solenoid with cotton tips and carny clean.

Toby is spot on. These clocks can be fixed, provided the gears aren't chewed up. They are often not. There are several good threads around such as http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarti...ock_repair.htm

My 356 one is an early electro-mechanical version and after I spent some time working out how it operated. I cleaned it with a solvent spray and then lubricated it with a little light clock oil and then sanded the contacts and added a new fuse wire (the original was a flawed design with a section of solder). All good now and buzzes away every now and then, winding itself. Yours should be even simpler.

My instruments were cleaned and serviced and from memory it cost about $500.... he was relatively quick too - I had them back in about 2 weeks.

Thanks Justin - will give Jason a call today.

If he can't help I may give it a shot myself ...

                    Cheers,

                    Ben.

It's not hard Ben. Just don't try to remove the front dress ring. It opens from the back. Sometimes the earths are dodgy too.

                        Hi Ben

Couldn't find the photo of the original speedo however it looked like this red tacho:

Now looks like the black one.

                        Cheers

                          Merv,
that's what I was worried about - creasing the dress ring as heard it's a special technique to remove.
However there's a bit of moisture in a couple as they fog in winter ... so might need the seals redone as well - not sure if there's a seal around the dress ring?

                          Adam,
that gauge looks pretty good to me ...

I think so too. However it took the best part of a year and I had to return it as the needle hadn't been painted and it was running in mph. Fingers crossed when I install the re callibration has now been done.

                            Cheers
