Is there a trick to installing new windscreen washer jets?

Gentlemen,
Is there a trick to installing new windscreen washer jets?
I've been trying for ages without success. The small flare in the rubber that is meant to act as a grommet, seems far too fine and short to span the thick metal of the bodywork.
I've tried pushing down firmly and rotating, but all that dies is to further contact the sealing flap.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Get rid of the valve, pull through from underneath and re install valve

In my experience Suerra Madre jets are rubbish too bought 4 all blocked

And use some rubber grease to ease the way, I suggest.
