Dash trim help

On my S the basket weave vinyl was glued to this piece of steel which is then inlaid in the alloy channel. Is this normal? (Based on the quality of the pressing I'm guessing it is). On other pieces on the dash (apart from the radio surround) vinyl is glued directly to the alloy channel.

Thanks Merv, I'm going to re-use the original just need to know whether to glue to this steel big and then insert in alloy, or glue direct to alloy.

I had one too when I replaced with new basket weave. I left it out as it seemed to perform no specific function.
