    Hoists

    Hi All

I've come to the realisation that until I get a warehouse of my very own, I am unlikely to be able to have my own hoist...

and then I came across this picture (I think it was on the pelican forum)...

Possibly an affordable practical alternative to floor/trolley jacks and jack stands?

Will start googling it tonight and let you know what i find...

    Cheers

I could do with one of those.

All I have to do is build the shed to house it in!

Rich, there seems to be a few of thsi style hoist avail ex USA, although this is the most compact i have seen so far.

if its a US built one, be careful the electric motor for the hydraulic pump isnt 110V. Maybe you could buy all except the pump and use a locally sourced one ?

Rich, I am sure the hoist you are interested in would be available locally. Powerrex look as though they have what you are looking for.

All very good... except I have been definitively told by my better half that I am not turning our garage into a workshop!

...but surely she wouldn't notice something that small kept under the car?!?

          Anyway, found the website http://www.bendpak.com/

The MD-6XP is the model - looks like it even comes with rubber pads which would be useful when lifting on the seam of the body. Phil, good point, looks like the pump is 110V/220V... presume 220V would be ok here...

Out of curiosity I have emailed them just to find out how much it is (don't really want to know the answer!).

          Cheers

Well, the Aust. distributor is Garage Equipment in QLD. A$2,950 excluding GST plus $200 to be delivered to Melbourne...

Another thing to add to the "When I win tatts" list...

And thinking about it, I'd probably be a bit concerned about stability with a heavily weight biased rear engined car up on it...

            Cheers

I agree with Jappy, keep a close eye on ebay for used lifts.

I got my 2 post REPCO lift for $1000. its the older style but who cares, it works fine. But you do need plenty of headroom, and its pretty hard to hide from your wife, but you could string up some lines between the posts and hey presto ! indoor clothes drying line. How good is that ?

I mean it would almost qualify as a Mother day present, right ?

i've never really understood the usefulness of those scissor lifts - what do people expect to use them for?

                        Ryan

You do raise an interesting point on how useful it'd be - I was thinking it'd a more convenient way of getting under the car if you don't have space for a two post hoist, safer than using a single floor/trolley jack and safer than trying to manouvre a car onto 4 jack stands...? maybe not so safe with a heavy rear weight bias?

My immediate thinking was that it'd be useful to do the torsion bar bushes... but surely it'd be useful for more than that? Particularly for a home mechanic?

                        Cheers

A question though, if you have a hoist and don't want to break your back when you're under the car, how much height does one need, including car ? Anyone got a hoist and can check ??

I realise its the distance from car underbody to the top of car roof plus or minus a bit for the hoist perhaps, plus my height.... However I don't have a car at hand and would love to know if anyone is close to a car on a hoist.....

but how do you get under the car with the lift in the way?

i don't see the advantage in these over jack stands - unless maybe you do a LOT of wheel changing. it only takes a few minuites to put a 911 on stands and, when properly positioned, they are very stable.

andrew - you really need to get your car back ;-)
