One question though. Why was it introduced in the first place?
Did they expect high oil usage?
Why didn't they just have the latch open mechanism is the engine bay away from accidental opening?
See my previous post about weight distribution as Justin has also mentioned. Also remember the 911R also had the oil tank in the same position so Porsche already had that in mind in 1967. It may have been a stamping/production issue that held it back from being introduced into the 911 range for a while ?
