    901 or 915 gearbox

For the 71e I have a 915 that I got with the car in need of a rebuild and the car was originally a sporto

Having only had a Carrera with a g50 box I have no experience with the others

I have a 2.2l to go in her and I'm after suggestions and/or opinions of best option for gearbox

A 901 (911 - same box, except it uses a 225mm clutch and is unique to 1970 & 1971) box would be correct for the car. I far prefer them to a 915 box and the dog leg shift pattern adds to the uniqueness of the car.

I hate the 901 box, maybe I have never driven one that was set up properly, but if your looking to keep it correct 901 it is

Mine is lovely Clyde. They can be, if properly bushed and adjusted at the yoke.

I test drove one a while back and made a mighty mess of it. Couldn't get my head around the position of 1st gear.

                Ash,

Hi, I've still got those lines - just moved house and slowly getting stuff together - will send in the next week.

I've got a rebuilt 901 box with a lsd - it's in a 914 case but has the correct '69 conversion (others may like to chime in on how big an issue this is for a 70/71 car), and slightly shorter top gearing, http://www.gboxweb.com/901specs.html - see 902/1 or 902/02.

I'm running a 2.7 engine, so would entertain a trade of some sort - when you say, needs a rebuild, do you know the extent?

                Cheers

901 boxes are awesome. It feels a little strange at first banging back into 2nd from 3rd. Also a tad on the slow side for standing quarter mile times as from 1st to 2nd is not as fast as the standard "H" pattern where you just rip the bad boy into the back seat. I have a 915 for my 71 so when it is on the road I can comment further. I see nothing wrong at all about the 901 box. I have heard 915's can be a bit tempremental when cold.

                    Is this true?

                    Does a 915 box fit in a 901 car without any mod's??

I scored a 901/13 for my 912 project and am looking forward to experiencing the drive.

Jim, I also have the same question about mods to fit the 915 box in.
Mine looks to have been bashed around the middle of the rear seats which i'm guessing was to accommodate the larger 915 nosecone.
                          Would this be the case?

Yes some BFH work is required to fit a 915 in to 901 / 911 trans car.

I'm a big fan of the 901 transaxle. One of the biggest advantages to them is their weight, super light compared to the 915 - I can easily lift off the engine by hand when dropped, even full of oil.
